A note by the author, Tiziana Colusso

This volume collects the translations of some of my poems from 2004 to 2024, originally written and published in Italian and then translated into various languages – by professional translators or authors – for international festivals, magazines or other occasions. The oldest version of the volume, with the same title, but fewer texts and fewer languages of translation, was published in 2012 thanks to Associazione Eurolinguistica Sud, preface by Prof. Jean Charles Vegliante – Université Sorbonne Nouvelle). The Association Eurolinguistica Sud is now closed, after the disappearance of Prof. Manuela Cipri. But I had permission from Prof. Vegliante to republish his wonderful preface.

I had intense travel periods among Poetry and Literary Festivals, Meetings, and Readings. This was possible thanks also to my role as an elected member – between 2005 and 2011 –  of the Board of the European Writers’ Council,  which put me in touch with many Writers’ Organizations all over Europe, and single writers and poets. A net of contacts that often outgrew the boundary of Literature, to become warm friendships, despite the geographical and sometimes cultural distance. From each of my literary journeys, I took home interesting Magazines and Anthologies with some of my texts translated into languages that I could read or often only admire as a picture; I got also a lot of friendly souvenirs of walks, discussions, drinking, shopping, singing exchanging books and dedicates…. It is impossible to reproduce here all these flavours and sounds, I hope that some of these feelings are passed on in the translations, transforming them into something more than an «academic» work of literary transposition from one language to another.

I want here to thank all the organizers of Festivals and Meetings, and all the translators of my texts: they are mostly poets and writers, passionate professors of Literature, or expert literary translators.

From 2014, with the closure of Sindacato Nazionale Scrittori, which has proposed me as the delegate for international issues, my life became more grounded in Italy, the new translations were mainly for international Magazines. But now – just on the occasion of 20 years after the first publication of this book – I’m invited to a Festival in Mostar, I have two poems translated into Bosnian, and this gave me the occasion of a fresh edition of the book, with all the new translations of the last years.

As a homage to France, where I resided for a couple of years and where I left more than a piece of my heart, I decided for the first edition of 2012 of this book to choose  – and I confirm this choice now –  a title that is a jeux de mots, a play of words, in Italian and French: «la lingua langue», is difficult to translate it in English, I can try with “The language languishes”, but it only has the half of the savour of the original title. Languages are not always symmetrical, they have different treasures to show. Maybe this volume – the original one of 2010 and the updated edition I present now in 2024 – was generated by that “vertige hyper-traductif” [hyper-translating vertigo] nominated by Jean-Charles Vegliante in his kind Preface. And maybe, in the future, vertigo will be generated by the research on the illuminated sound of silence…

THANKS TO ALL THE TRANSLATORS OF MY TEXTS, in the order they appear in the INDEX:
